Stratospheric Cataclysm Oil on Wood 8"x10" 2016
Biography
"...... Lillian Abel, who works "from memory, impulse and emotion" based on the energy she experiences in nature. Abel creates powerful oil-on-panel paintings that are both lush abstractions and resonate echoes of the landscape. Arctic Breath (2017) presents swirling white expanses that sweep across a dense, dark ground line. It might be a snowstorm surging across brittle black cliffs. But it can also be read as an abstract study of formal contrasts: light vs. dark, stillness vs. motion, molten liquidity vs. anchored stability." ...
"The Zen-like contradiction of Abel''s title [Nothing Is Everything No. 5] echoes the enduring contrasts of her paintings. Abstract yet representational, fixed yet dynamic, seductive yet ambiguous, Abel's work fascinates visually in the way a Buddhist Koan appeals yet withholds logical comprehension " ~ Betty Ann Brown, PhD
